Checking your UCR status takes about a minute and costs nothing. The official record lives in the National Registration System (NRS) at ucr.gov, keyed to your USDOT number. There is no card, sticker, or cab credential to look for — UCR compliance is a database record, and both you and roadside enforcement read the same one. Here is how to run the check, what the result means, and what to do if the current year comes back missing.
Where the Official Record Lives
UCR registrations are filed and stored in the National Registration System operated by the UCR Plan. The record is keyed to the USDOT number of the legal entity — not the MC number, and not the company name. That matters in two situations: entities with multiple USDOT numbers must check (and file) each one separately, and a carrier that re-formed under a new legal entity needs a registration under the new entity's USDOT number, because the old entity's filing does not transfer.
Note that UCR status does not appear in FMCSA's SAFER snapshot. SAFER covers USDOT registration and operating-authority data; the UCR Plan links to it for company information, but the UCR registration record itself is in the NRS. The same separation applies to other FMCSA filings — a BOC-3 process-agent designation shows in FMCSA's systems, while UCR lives in the UCR Plan's system. Verifying one tells you nothing about the other.
Step-by-Step: Checking Your Status
- Have your USDOT number ready. The lookup is by USDOT number only.
- Go to ucr.gov.The NRS home screen asks for the USDOT number up front (“Enter USDOT to begin”), plus acceptance of the site terms. No account or login is required.
- Read the record for the current registration year.UCR runs strictly on the calendar year. A paid 2025 does not cover any part of 2026 — the year you need to see paid is the current one.
- Between October 1 and December 31, check the upcoming year too. The portal for the next registration year opens around October 1 (the 2026 portal opened October 1, 2025). Enforcement of the new year begins January 1 with no grace period, so a Q4 status check should confirm both years.
- Save the receipt or confirmation as a PDF.Optional, but cheap insurance — more on that below.

File UCR NowNo Credential Required — and What to Carry Anyway
There is no UCR credential. The UCR Plan's official FAQ is explicit: carriers are not required to carry any proof of UCR compliance in the vehicle, because 49 USC §14506 generally prohibits states from requiring interstate carriers to display credentials in or on a commercial motor vehicle, and none of the exceptions apply to UCR. The same FAQ adds that you may carry the receipt for payment of the fees if you choose.
Carry it. A PDF of the payment confirmation in the cab or the driver app costs nothing and resolves the rare stale-data dispute — a scale-house screen that has not refreshed since your filing posted — in seconds instead of phone calls. It is optional proof, not required proof, but it is the difference between a two-minute stop and a two-hour one.
How Roadside Verification Works
The CVSA UCR Enforcement Bulletin — the guidance commercial-vehicle inspectors actually work from — directs officers to verify UCR compliance through electronic systems during roadside inspections. Officers also look for evidence that the operation is interstate at all: logbook entries, toll receipts, bills of lading. If the operation is interstate and the current-year UCR is missing, the violation is documented under inspection code 392.2 (failure to pay UCR fees), and the state can issue citations and fines under 49 USC §14504a(i)(4).
If the Status Comes Back Missing
File immediately — the exposure runs until the filing posts. Electronic filings record in the NRS once payment confirms, typically within minutes, and the compliance record is then visible to enforcement nationwide. Filing late does not erase citations already issued, but it stops new ones. The full consequence chain is in the what happens if you miss UCR guide, and the calendar mechanics are in when is UCR due. If the record is missing because you never filed at all, start with the how to file UCR guide.
Bottom line:ucr.gov, USDOT number, sixty seconds. Confirm the current calendar year is paid — and the upcoming year too if it is Q4. No credential is required in the truck, but carrying the payment receipt is free insurance. If the year is missing, file the same day; the record posts electronically and the exposure stops there.
