UCR Registration for 2027: What Carriers Need to Know

The 2027 Unified Carrier Registration year is expected to open on October 1, 2026 - the National UCR Registration System has historically opened for the upcoming year on that date. From there the calendar runs the way it does every year: file during the fall window, be registered before January 1, because enforcement of the 2027 year starts at 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2027 with no statutory grace period.

The expected 2027 timeline

• October 1, 2026 (expected)— the system opens for 2027 registrations. The UCR board has shifted the open date in past cycles, so treat early October as the watch window rather than a guarantee.
• October–December 2026— the renewal window. Filing early clears payment failures and fleet-count questions while there is still time to fix them.
• December 31, 2026— the last compliant day to have 2027 registration in place.
• January 1, 2027— enforcement begins. A carrier without current-year UCR is out of compliance as of this date.

2027 fees: what is actually known

The honest answer as of this writing: 2027 fees are not final. The 2026 schedule is unchanged from 2025 under 49 CFR 367.50 - the current brackets are on the 2026 cost guide. For 2027, a Federal Register proposed rule published April 7, 2026 would raise UCR fees by an average of about 20 percent starting with the 2027 registration year. A proposal is not a final rule: until one publishes, any site quoting exact 2027 dollar amounts is guessing.

Two things are safe to say. First, fees are set per registration year - whatever schedule is final for 2027 applies whenever you file, so there is no beating an increase by filing on opening day. Second, your bracket still depends on how you count your fleet, which is where most overpayment actually happens - a miscounted fleet moves you a full bracket regardless of what the rates do. What to do before the window opens

1. File 2026 now if you have not. The 2027 conversation is moot if your current year is missing - 2026 enforcement is active today, at roadside checks and registration audits alike.
2. Verify your fleet count. The bracket cutoffs reward getting this right on the day you file, not after a citation.
3. Queue the renewal. On auto-renew, your 2027 filing goes in when the system opens - no calendar reminder, no December scramble.
